With a distinctively sweet fragrance that recalls both hay and honey, Helichrysum shrubs dot the Island wherever the soil is sandy – from the rugged coastline to the rocky forest roads. Only Sardinia and Corsica host a limited number of native subspecies of Helichrysum italicum called Microphyllum, that has naturally evolved here over millennia.
Used primarily for cosmetics, thanks to its antimicrobial, astringent, antiseptic and anti-redness properties, the oil from Helichrysum Italicum also has excellent culinary properties. With a stunning combination of silvery blue foliage and bright yellow flowers, it’s no wonder the name comes from the Greek terms “helios” for sun and “chrysos” for gold.
